On Sunday, May 11, State Police in Greene County responded to the Kaaterskill Creek near State Route 32A in Palenville for a report of a water emergency. When they got there, they found a man had saved the life of a 17-year old from Catskill who nearly drowned.

State police say Richard Larson, 43, swam to the teenager and pulled him to safety. The 17-year old from Catskill had been swimming with two friends when the current pulled him into deeper water. As he went under, he couldn’t swim to shore, police said. So Larsen, who heard people calling for help, ran to the area, jumped in and pulled him to safety.

The boy was taken by EMS to Columbia Memorial Hospital for treatment.
