The Rensselaer County Jail has a new way for inmates to communicate with visitors – video chat.

The Skype-like video chat system will allow those incarcerated to communicate with lawyers, friends and family members over the internet using computers, tablets or mobile phones, according to Sheriff Jack Mahar. The Remote Video Visitation system requires no special computer skills and delivers clear visitation over the internet.

Remote Video Visitation eliminates time and stress associated with travel to and from the correctional facility by reserving a visit on-line, Mahar said in a release.

Reservations must be paid either by a credit card or prepaid money card and the cost is $9 per 20 minute visit.
