Stone Temple Pilots' frontman Scott Weiland always adored David Bowie â as evidenced by covering songs like âJean Genie,â âAshes to Ashes,â âAndy Warhol,â and âFame,â throughout his career â and Matt Pinfield recalls calling on the rock icon to speak with the troubled singer shortly before both legends died.
âThe last time I saw David, at the end of our conversation he pulled me aside and said, âI know youâre friends with Scott Weiland. Please let him know that Iâm here to talk if he needs someone,â" the former 120 Minutes MTV personality writes in his book All These Things That Iâve Done: My Insane, Improbable Rock Life (via Alternative Nation). "I think he spotted in Scott a kindred soul. Not only musically â you can hear the Bowie influence so powerfully on STP songs like âAnd So I Knowâ on their third album, and âKitchenware & Candybarsâ on Purple â but in terms of the demons he was fighting. So backstage at one of his solo shows I passed along that offer to Scott, and he said, âIâd love to talk to him.â That was my final encounter with Scott. By the start of 2016, both he and Bowie were gone.â
Weiland died of an accidental overdose in December of 2015, while Bowie died from cancer in January of 2016.
