I'd assume that if you were alive on this day 16 years ago then that image of the Twin Towers is ingrained in your memory like it is mine. We all have our own memories of that tragic day so I thought that I would share mine with you.
Ironically it was a day kind of like today is, a beautiful September morning, I was working for Capital Gypsum, now L&W Supply, and we were making a delivery to Colonie Center. We were about half way done with our unload when we caught win that a plane had hit one of the Twin Towers. The reports we heard were very vague since not many details had not been released as of yet and we were not near a TV, so we had no idea if it was a commercial plane or if it was a private plane. We had NO ideal. As details started to come out the guy that I was working with, Jeff Palin, and I went into our truck and turned on Howard Stern. It was then that we found out that it was a commercial jet that had crashed into the 1st tower. As we were listening we learned that another jet had crashed into the other tower. We both sat in the truck, in shocked, and just listened. I'd say we sat there for about 25 minutes before we continued on with our unload. Once we finished up at Colonie Center we headed back to our shop in Cohoes where our office was just sitting and watching the news. None of us really had the words to explain how any of us were feeling at the time. We were sent home around 1:30 that day. Once I got home I literally sat on my couch for the entire night and watched CNN. I remember crying and at the same time being angry. I remember wondering why, why would anyone do this.
One of the other things that I remember very clearly is the unity that we all felt. In the weeks to follow I remember everyone coming together as Americans. I remember seeing American Flags flying everywhere, people willing to help out any way that they could. Donating their time, food, clothing, money, whatever it took. During that time I was reminded of how great this Country could be when we put aside our petty differences and come together for one common goal. To show these terrorists that we will not take this laying down. You can attack us but you will never divide us and scare us into submission.
So, here we are 16 years later and I see what's going on in our Country and have to wonder what happened to us? Have we forgotten? Have we become so submerged in our political differences that we've forgotten that we are ALL on the same team? Why must it take such a tragedy to unite us? We are all allowed to have different opinions but those opinions should NEVER divide us as people. Think about that for just a minute.
So as I sit here 16 years later writing this, I have not forgotten what we all felt on this day back in 2001. Those feeling have not gone away. So if you're reading this, please know that I love you and appreciate you for who you are. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for taking the time to listen to my little radio show. You will never know how much it means to me.
