Potato Chips Were Invented in Saratoga

Since today is National Potato Chip Day, I thought I'd share a little bit of history with you.

As far as we know, the potato chip was actually invented in Saratoga Springs, did you know that? I just learned this today. Or as the saying goes "I was today years old when I learned that potato chips were invented in Saratoga Springs."

The story is that in 1853 a wealthy eating at Moons Lake House in Saratoga and he orders "fried potatoes" but he kept sending them back because they were too thick and soggy for his liking. Oddly enough, the way that they were being sent to his table was the way that they were always made. Frustrated by the picky customer, cook George Speck or better known as George Crum, sliced the potatoes as thin as he possibly could and over salted them so that the customer would not enjoy them at all. Apparently that was exactly what the customer was looking for because he actually ordered more. Word spread about these delicious new treats and became extremely popular with customers. By 1860, George opened his own place and served "Saratoga Chips" at his tables. Even more so, "Saratoga Chips" were the name given to the "potato chip" until the 20th century.

So, while everyone celebrates "National Potato Chip Day" all over the US, they can all thank The Capital Region for their delicious treat. Oh, and to everyone that's reading this that doesn't live in the 518, you're welcome.
