Barbie Is Getting Even More Inclusive Than Ever

When I, and people around my age, were growing up, Barbie was pretty straight forward: blonde, tall, skinny, with fabulous clothes. Over the years they of course added her friends and you could get a Barbie with your own hair color (probably), but now Barbie is more inclusive than EVER.

The new Barbie Fashionistas 2019 line is more inclusive and representative than ever and proves this doll is for literally everyone, not just kids who look like the original Barbie.

In 2016, Barbie introduced a line with four new body types, seven skin tones, 22 eye colors, and 24 hairstyles, in order to fit a broader range of girls.

NOW, they're taking things to the next level with Barbie dolls with a new braided hair texture, a new body type for Barbie that shows off a smaller bust with a less defined waist and more defined arms, and dolls with permanent physical disabilities.BRAVO, Barbie and Mattel! Not only did they expand the brand, but Barbie worked with UCLA Mattel Children's hospital, along with some wheelchair experts, to create the toy that represents so many and is functional. The new Barbie wheelchair "is modeled after a real, rigid frame wheelchair," the spokesperson tells Romper.13-year-old Jordan Reeves from the Born Just Right organization also stepped in to help Barbie perfect the doll with a prosthetic limb.

I have so much respect for Barbie working toward becoming more inclusive for ALL young girls - and boys - who want to play with their toys. It's so important that kids had dolls who look like them growing up.

It makes me excited to some day give my daughter Aiza a Barbie who looks like her, which is something I didn't have growing up.

Congratulations on the new line, Barbie! You're going to make so many girls happy with these new dolls.
