See The Medals For Tokyo's 2020 Olympics - Made From Recycled Electronics!

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games One Year To Go

I LOVE the Olympics. There's just something special about that time of year where most people are tuning in at some point during the day to catch a couple different events. And even if you're not a big sports fan, it's still a lot of fun to watch.

Plus, getting to GO to Brazil for the last summer Olympics as part of the radio show was incredible. So yeah, the Olympics are pretty special for me.

Which is why I'm SO excited about the upcoming 2020 Olympics which will take place in Tokyo. And on Wednesday of this week, which marked exactly 1 year until the opening ceremonies (!!!), we were given a sneak peek at the medals that will be given out during the Tokyo Olympics - and not only are these medals SO beautiful, but they're also made to raise awareness for recycling.

The International Olympic Committee released a statement earlier this week explaining the design and purpose behind the medals.

For the upcoming Olympics, each medal will be made from metal obtained from recycled consumer electronics over the last two years.

And the designs actually came to the committee through a competition!

"The winning designs were selected after a nationwide competition open to both professional designers and design students. A specially assigned selection panel had the difficult task of whittling down more than 400 entries before settling on the ideas presented by Junichi Kawanishi, Director of the Japan Sign Design Association and the Osaka Design Society."

Japan has been working hard to ensure the upcoming Olympic Games will be the "most environmentally friendly and sustainable Games so far." And that goal started long before our personal countdowns to the opening ceremony began. In fact, the people of Tokyo have been participating in the Tokyo 2020 Medal Project - "a landmark recycling initiative which ensured that each one has been moulded entirely from metal extracted from recycled consumer electronics over the past two years."

This is SUCH a great idea, and I love seeing how innovative they are being with the medals. Now after seeing them, I just can't wait to see who will be wearing them!!

Which sport are you most excited for?!
