An American tourist was killed and his wife was seriously injured after both were suspected to have been electrocuted by a malfunctioning hot tub at a private resort in Mexico on Tuesday (June 11), the General Prosecutor's Office for the State of Sonora confirmed via KTSM.

The victims were identified by authorities as Jorge G., 43, and Lizette Z., of El Paso, Texas. The incident took place at around 10:00 p.m. at the Sonoran Sea Resort in Puerto Penasco.

Lizette was reportedly transported back to the United States and hospitalized in critical condition from injuries sustained, according to KTSM. The woman suffered burns consistent with electric shock suspected to have been caused by faulty wiring, according to the General Prosecutor's Office.

A witness who knew the couple said they spotted Jorge and Lizette in the outdoor hot tub but neither was moving and was shocked while trying to call for help. Jorge's official cause of death has not yet been determined and an investigation into the incident is ongoing, the El Paso Times reported.

Sara Gaitan-Perez, an Arizona woman who was also staying at the resort, told the Arizona Daily Star that she and others attempted to help the victims but noticed the man had no pulse when she arrived at the scene.

“We had just come from the pool, and my husband and son were in that very same (hot tub) about an hour before,” Gaitan-Perez said.
