The Sears department store in Aviation Mall, Queensbury will be closing up this fall. The store had been a landmark in the area since it opened in 1977. Due to declining sales and financial difficulty, Sears has been struggling all over the country for over a decade. The most notable store closure came when the Sears in Colonie Center shut its doors in September 2017.
It's a tough blow to Aviation Mall since they lost Bon Ton as an anchor store in April.
This leaves only one Sears department store in the area, that's at Wilton Mall. There are a few smaller franchises around the area, such as the Sears Appliance Outlets and Hometown Stores.
At one time there were over 3500 stores nationwide, today it's estimated there are only between 500-600
